Another BJJ BlueBelt Joins the Ranks

In a training trip to Nashville MMA, Mr. Josh Geers was once again surprised with a promotion! He was thrown in the shark tank with 15 minutes of straight wrestling to receive is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blue Belt.

Josh has been training hard for a few years and after countless hours on the mat, a major injury that kept him off the mat for a bit, and the strength it took to return to the mat....it was obvious that his Blue Belt was long overdue!

We are honored to have Josh as one of our Kids Coaches here at Club MMA and now also honored to have him in our adult classes with a little color adorning his waist!!

Congrats Josh!

New Instructor Blackbelt Given

We would like to announce that Head Coach Jeff Robison has given longtime student and Coach Josh Geers his Club MMA instructor black belt!

On Wednesday, May 4th the lobby began to fill up with Club MMA students and Josh's family while he was coaching a typical Junior Jabber class. He kept glancing back with confusion but it all made sense when Coach Robison (to josh's surprise) pulled out an instructor black belt and presented it to Coach Geers.

Josh started with Club MMA as a BJJ student, but showed immediate potential after always being the first person to help a student in need. We really liked that quality in Josh and so when the school was in need of additional help, we offered Josh an instructorship position. Josh spent 50 hours a week at regular job and another 15 hours each week helping out and making time for extra training to learn how to coach. When the time was right Club MMA hired Josh as our first full time employee. His addition to the Club MMA staff has been a great experience-you can see and hear his passion when he is on the mat. Mr. Geers is one of the lead Club MMA childrens program coaches. He is currently training and coaching full time, and has found a home with Club MMA.

Thank you Josh for all your hardwork and dedication!

Vegas Muay Thai Training

Head Coach Jeff Robison and Muay Thai Coach Nik Hoobler-Scherff got to escape the Cincinnati rain and spend some time in sunny Las Vegas for some advanced Muay Thai Training. Getting out of the club is good for our instructors as it helps them think outside the box, obtain new perspectives and miss their family, training partners and clients a little bit...which is always good! The two got to spend two full days training at the Las Vegas Muay Thai Gym with Master Vong, the master instructor there. With over 200 hundred career fights in Thailand, this man is a wealth of knowledge and still tough as nails at the age of 55! The two spend a lot of time working on their posture, stance and how to deliver the power of Muay Thai. The two also got a chance to pop into Wanderlei Silva's MMA Gym and of course they did get a few hours to soak in the pool too. Though both came home with lots of bumps, bruises and extremely sore feet and shins, they were so excited and can't wait to improve the Muay Thai program here at Club MMA!

3 Great Competitors - Huge Wins for Club MMA

First, Club MMA's Nik Hoobler-Scherff was invited to join Team Shawn Hammonds at the Pan American Jiu Jitsu Tournament in California. Nik entered the white beltdivision at 170 lbs. along with over 60 competitors. He won his first two matches to get him to the top 8, losing his third match only by points to the Division Champion. We couldn't be prouder of Nik and his accomplishments. Top 8 in North & South America is an incredible accomplishment!!

Next, Levon "Sacko" Sacket embarked on his journey to the cage. A gi BJJ student, Levon finally stepped up and said he wanted to compete in the cage–on of his bucket list pipe dreams. With a very strong ground game, Levon really needed to focus on improving his standup throughout fight camp. On April 2, 2011 Levon weighed in at 155lbs and faced off against opponent Rayshaun Allen, a seasoned amateur out of Shamrock MMA in Covington. Levon displayed a dominating first round but in the second round took a hard uppercut that landed Levon on his back. He kept his cool and listened to his coaches and overturned his opponent, passed the guard to side control and finished the fight via head
and arm choke. It was a great victory!

Finally, on May 7, 2011 Thomas Deinlein took his turn in the cage. Weighing in at 145lbs Thomas entered the cage cool as a cucumber and his relaxed demeanor payed off! Thomas touched gloves with his opponent blitzed in and got the takedown. He finished the fight in a mere 41 seconds with a knockout ground and pound! It was a great showing for Club MMA!

April 10th, it was the Juniors turn to step up their skills and compete in board breaking, sparring and grappling AND THEY DIDN"T DISAPPOINT! We were so impressed with the the skill shown!

2 New Club MMA BLACKBELTS

Mr. Bradley Hatting and Ms. Sofie Tedesco earned their blackbelts February 19, 2011 at Club MMA after a 2 hour promotional exam. We have had the honor to coach these two wonderful young adults for the past 6 years. In that time we've watched them grow and mature. They've worked hard, put in countless hours of practice and dedication to their pursuit and proved themselves to have not only the skill to earn their rank, but they embody the attitude of a true Blackbelt.

The exam started with demonstrations of skill, followed by board breaking and after over 15 rounds of sparring, (just when they thought they might be done we saved the hardest for last) they then had to dig deep for more energy and go several rounds of grappling.

We are so proud of Bradley and Sofie and feel honored to have them on our team and part of our Club MMA Family!
