Movie Night - The "new" Karate Kid
More than six dozen kids had a fun night in November when this year's flick of choice for our Annual Movie Night was the new Karate Kid!
We once again rolled out the red carpet, got the old fashioned popcorn machine popping and broke out the projector for a fun night!

Halloween at Club MMA
Samurai Robison and Sumo Wrestler Geers led some pretty awesome Halloween Parties this weekend!
We had superheroes, witches and ninjas galore. A few nerds were there to calculate how much fun we had and the ghostbusters kept the goblins, ghouls and vampires in check.
Plus, the Army and S.W.A.T team were on hand just in case our Gangsters got out of line. And while we always tease the Juniors that Ms. Abbie is going to teach dance instead of learning MMA, someone finally showed up ready for Ms. Abbie's Dance Class!
We had so much fun with all of our characters this weekend. Click here to see all the pictures.

BJJ Seminar with Shawn Hammonds
BJJ Black Belt Shawn Hammonds taught a seminar at Club MMA on September 26th. It was a pretty good turnout. Shawn showed us some competition tricks and techniques that were pretty cool to say the least. All who attended walked away with a renewed excitement for the sport of BJJ! Looking forward to the next tournament!

In Memory
I walked into John Helton’s life at the age of 7 years old. My best friend Andy asked if I wanted to take karate at his Uncle John’s house. Of course I went and we ended up training with John for a couple of years. Our class was called the Bears, we were just a group of neighborhood kids meeting every Monday night in Johns basement, called the karate room. Like anything else, all good things came to an end as my friend Andy decided to start playing soccer. I loved martial arts too much to quit, so I decided to keep training martial arts at another school. I spent the next 10 years learning Tae Kwon Do and really focusing on getting a black belt and helping instruct classes.
My friend Andy and I reconnected after college, and he mentioned I should reconnect with his uncle John.
I called John and spent the last 8 years of my life learning 'the martial arts movie.' He always explained just as a movie has frames our life is made up of thousands of experiences. Experience them and make your own movie.
John introduced me to all kinds of styles, principles, concepts, and Instructors. He took me in as a student and showed me how to learn by seeing, doing, and feeling. He always pushed me to train with anyone that was better then me.
John Helton passed away July 30, 2010. It was very unexpected and upsetting. John has been a major influence in my life and I will miss him dearly. I will try everyday to carry on his legacy through the martial arts.
Rest in peace my friend!
Judo Training
Club Instructor, Jeff Robison reconnected with his Judo Sensei a couple of years ago, and has finally buckled down and started to take it seriously. It has taken a couple of months but Jeff has been promoted to green belt. Even though he has been training Martial Arts for over 20 years, it's still fun to get a new belt! Judo has really complimented his BJJ training and will no doubt add another flare to the Club MMA curriculum.

Club Family Picnic - a success!
We had our Club MMA Family Picnic at Kuliga Park Sunday, August 15th. We had so much fun! We got about 15 minutes of rain during dinner but the rain cooled it off so we could play the rest of the night! It was great to have so many people come together for good conversation, good food and a fun night. The dads got out and joined in with the kids for some kickball and even the big boys had their play time tossing around.
Thanks to everyone who came and thank you all for being our extended family!

Nik "The Project" Hoobler-Scherff gets the Tapout!
Nik Hoobler-Scherff, Club MMA Student and Fighter, has what it takes in our opinion. As a coach, you can't ask for more in a fighter. He is dedicated and passionate about this sport and he has a skill that many lack-the 100% willingness to listen whole-heartedly!
His dedication and self-determination paid off after an 8-week fight camp and 27lb weight cut. He met his opponent Friday, July 16th at weigh-ins making the 155lb weight division. Saturday, he entered the cage at the MMA Big Show Event and walked out with another win making Club MMA jiu jitsu look good with his rolling armbar to get the tapout!

3 more students earn BJJ Blue Belts
Art Fink, Paul Sullivan and Josh Stewart earned their blue belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. All who watched the test know they definitely "earned" it, as the three students had to first demonstrate techniques, then wresle 9 rounds of positional wrestling and finally finished the test by taking Three 3-minute rounds with the highest three ranks there. It was Amazing!!
ArtFink, Paul Sullivan and Josh Stewart made Club MMA very proud. They are all outstanding students, wonderful people and perfect examples of true martial artists!

The Official Prilosec CAGE WALL!
Mr. Jeff Robison was chosen as The Official Prilosec OTC MMA Instructor and because of this, Prilosec OTC sponsored Jeff and the Club. The first portion of the funds were used to create a new cage wall for our advanced students.
The process began Friday night as the materials were carried into Club MMA. Forty feet of fencing, and over thirty feet of metal poles made their way in. Thanks to some dedicated students, building began.
Saturday afternoon the fence went up with a lot of muscle pulling it tight! The end result is awesome!
Monday night, the advanced Muay Thai students got their first training session with the newly installed cage wall! It was quite a workout and everyone was excited!!
Thanks to all the guys who helped throughout the weekend: Art Fink, Zac Moody, Josh Geers, Jeremy Schomp, Bruce Abbott, James Roberts and especially Levon Sackett!!!
